The Top Schools Award for Best British Curriculum School in the United Arab Emirates. Top Schools Awards 2023 Nomination and Entry Forms.

by Jon WestleyJanuary 1, 2023

Below is the official entry form for the Top Schools Award for Best British Curriculum School in the United Arab Emirates 2023-24, our award recognising schools offering the most outstanding UK curriculum education in the UAE, and its recognition of the many knock-on positive impacts of this on the lives of children.

A British education is seen by many as the very best available in the world, with its post-16 A Level qualification the gold standard for its academic richness of learning and its ability to open doors to top tier universities worldwide. For many too, a British education wields power and influence – more here. A British education today, however, has evolved to celebrate further strengths, particularly in technical stream education where its BTEC pathway today underpins the majority of International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme qualifications and includes more than 2000 qualifications across 16 plus industry sectors ranging from F1 Motorsport Engineering to Film and Television Production. The development of T Levels, a blending of BTEC and A Levels with a greater weighting to academic study promises to further secure the reputation of British education as at the forefront of curriculum development in qualifications related directly to industry. Add to this the emergence of Degree Apprenticeships as the increasingly preferred pathway for students seeking an alternative to traditional university entrance on graduating school, and British education is argued to shine a light on the likely future shape of education coming down the track worldwide.

The Best British schools however go further in managing the heavy demands of both academic or technical pathways with an equally powerful commitment to, and focus on, child happiness, well-being and the whole child – something that is arguably more difficult in a system traditionally geared around concentrated broad spectrum study until age 16 to GCSE and significant depth of study at Sixth Form. Many argue that you can recognise a child educated at an outstanding British school by the spectrum of qualities they demonstrate that you cannot learn in books, these ranging from an inner confidence (not arrogance), emotional intelligence, gifted oracy and questioning mindset to a sense of purpose and care for the Other.

The best UK curriculum schools then, shine a light on what the best education in the world can be – with this focus on the bigger, whole child picture and, in the majority of cases, a recognition of the importance of providing a breadth of qualification pathways to meet the needs of every child. With some 80 individual subject options available at A Level, in conjunction with the more than 2000 technical stream qualification pathways, British schools have an unparalleled opportunity to stand-out in both their focus, culture and ambition for children.

For this Award then, we are looking for British curriculum schools that build to these strengths. We are looking for schools that celebrate British qualifications as a gateway to to this much more profound, bigger picture delivery of a whole child education that leaves young men and women leaving school with a holistic education built on their individual needs, ambitions and gifts, and one celebrating the many ways we all live our lives beyond books.

This is why in this Award we are looking for UK curriculum schools that offer a range of subject choices and qualification pathways for children that are perfectly matched to the needs of their intake, and a whole child, rounded, ethically rich and creative problem-solving curriculum that brings to life the important contribution we all make in our lives outside employment and study. We are particularly keen to celebrate schools that achieve graduating pathways for students in further education that include Sport and the broader Arts.

This will be a British school that sparkles with imagination and ambition in the way it teaches the English National Curriculum for all their students, one with a warmth that engenders the passion of teachers and the adoration of children and parents alike. And, finally, it will be a school that ensures that every graduating student can speak with others with knowledge and passion about a breadth of subjects and interests when they leave the school to start the next chapter of their lives, each empowered with the values and confidence to make a positive, personal impact in the world before them.

Top Schools Awards 2023 The STEAM Years

This year, the Top Schools Awards are celebrating outstanding achievement in our schools with a particular focus on how schools inspire children by linking all subject areas to bring the extraordinary wonders of the Arts, creativity, imagination – and freedom to experiment and innovate, into all areas of the curriculum including, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

We believe, passionately, that the Arts are absolutely fundamental to delivering an outstanding education for every child, one focused on the whole child and the gifts all children have to change the world for the better and make the difference – every day, and in the future. The Arts bring STEM to life.

In November 2023, members of the TSA Space and Rocket programme completed first phase testing of the ImaginationTM powered Jet Pack specially manufactured for this year’s STEAM focused Awards. We visited a number of the region’s most outstanding schools. We are particularly grateful for the assistance of the extraordinary and accredited Rocket Pilot, Space Girl and aspiring young engineer Valentina from Durham School Dubai (pictured) for her considerable, and quite, totally, awesome, bravery and kindness in completing rocket pack inaugural flight testing.

Without her, and those many other children we visited across the UAE, none of this would have been possible. They made us… believe.
