iCADEMY Middle East, Dubai Knowledge Village

Updated November 2016

iCademy Middle East is the new name/brand for the K12 International Academy, a ‘school’ first established in Dubai in 2008.  Our focus here is on the blended programmes offered by iCademy which combine the on-line teaching of a traditional K-Year 12 US curriculum with a physical location in which students can learn “together”, based in Dubai Knowledge Village.

The blended programme has local teachers (“On-line Learning Coaches”), each holding a minimum Bachelor’s degree and full teacher training qualification, however their role is better described as coaching/motivational/organisational. Core instruction is carried on [...]

Emirates National School, Abu Dhabi City Campus, Al Nahyan

Established by Presidential Decree, and owned by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs (MOPA), so much is expected of Emirates National School (ENS). Given the brand, cache, stamp of the President, and significant investment, one would expect the school, or what is actually a cluster of schools operating under a single brand, to be setting benchmarks for the sector and shining a light for best practice as beacon schools in the emirate. We would have expected glowing ADEC reports, happy, positive feedback from teachers and glowing reports from students.

In contrast, the schools as a whole have fared badly since the first school, established in Mohammed Bin Zayed City, opened its [...]

Dubai Arabian American Private School, Al Muhaisnah 1

Dubai Arabian American Private School is an all-through American curriculum school offering FS to Year 12 “education” for students between the ages of 4 and 18.

It is not a school that can currently be recommended for prospective parents. The school is identified as a “Weak” school by the KHDA, meaning that the school is not functioning effectively for its children. It is one of seven schools performing at this, the lowest current grading awarded to any school in Dubai.

However, it is important to note that the school has now been purchased by new owners who have claimed that they are genuinely committed to delivering an outstanding school.

KHDA inspectors note: [...]

Al-Mizhar American Academy, Al-Mizhar 1, Mirdif

Updated March 2017

Al-Mizhar American Academy (AAM), previously Al-Mizhar American Academy Private School for Girls, is best understood as a single-sex all-girl through school offering an FS to Grade 12 education based on the US, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, curriculum to children between the ages of 3 years and 18 years. AAM is a co-educational school for Pre-KG to KG 2, this provided very much following the request of, and as a service to parents. The school is owned and managed by the highly respected Taaleem. If this is the somewhat dry and descriptive background to Al Mizhar, the reality on the ground is of an absolutely wonderful school that after our [...]

GEMS Sports Academy, Bradenton Preparatory Academy Campus, Dubai Sports City

Updated October 2016

GEMS Sports Academy describes a very special and unique programme developed by GEMS Education in Dubai to nurture elite student athletes in the emirate. Established in 2014, it is the first programme of its type in the UAE and has much in common with best-in-class US programmes designed from their core to nurture the gifts of elite sports men and women with outstanding talent in their sporting field.

To understand the Sports Academy offer, it is best understood by prospective parents and students as a vehicle for GEMS to deliver an individually mapped elite sports based secondary education, rather than seeing it as a “bricks and mortar” school. The [...]

Dubai International School Al Quoz, Al Quoz 1

Updated December 2016

Dubai International School Al Quoz [DISQ] is the sister school of Dubai International School, Al Garhoud [DISG]. Together they comprise the Dubai International School [DIS]. Whilst the schools refer to themselves as campuses of a single school and, notwithstanding that the schools share common ownership, curriculum and values, the Dubai inspectorate treats them separately.

There is some merit in this as there are differences between the schools both in terms of facility provision, school transparency, delivery on the ground and leadership from the school’s respective Heads.

As of 2016-17, both schools achieve a basic “Acceptable” rating by [...]

West Yas School, Yas West, Yas Island

Updated December 2016

West Yas School, situated, perhaps unsurprisingly, in Yas West, will be the first to adopt the American curriculum in the Aldar Academies network when it opens in September 2016. It will be the second major school to open on the island after SABIS International School situated in Yas East.

The kindergarten to Grade 12 co-ed school will offer the Massachusetts State curriculum, another first for the Emirate, and a curriculum widely mooted in the US for both its academic rigor and whole child focus, in part drawn from sharing developmental links with both Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology [MIT].

The curriculum is [...]

American School of Dubai, Al Barsha

Updated December 2016

The American School of Dubai [ASD], previously known as the Jumeirah American School, is an independent not for profit community school located on a 1 million square foot facility within Al Barsha. The school remains the only US not-for-profit and was the first American curriculum school in the Emirate.

Recognized for its outstanding whole child development and academic programmes the school remains controversial for its refusal to embrace the core Arabic curriculum and the priority it affords in entrance to US and Canadian families, albeit this exclusivity has now been diluted since the move to a much larger campus at Al Barsha in 2010. Today 23% [...]

GEMS Nations Academy, Al Barsha

Updated January 2017

In the launch of Nations Academy, GEMS Education is seeking to raise the bar of Tier 1 premium American curriculum based educational provision in the Emirates.

“We aim for GEMS Nation to be a beyond “Outstanding” school –  it is not enough anymore to just focus on achieving the top KHDA rating.” Tom Farquhar, Founding Head, GEMS Nations Academy, WhichSchoolAdvisor.com

Its ambition is not only limited to the breadth and quality of facility provision; more powerfully it is seeking to create the lowest staff to student ratio of classroom teacher provision available across any school in the Gulf by replacing all teacher support assistants [...]

Clarion School, Al Quoz Park 1

With a plethora of tier-one schools opening in the Emirates, it takes something very special to stand out from the crowd.

A notable feature of nearly all new UAE schools targeting the top end of the market are very significant investments in capital build and facilities. These however, no matter how grand and extensive, are the shell of a school and prospective parents should not be blinded by empty glass and steel promises. The heart of a school, and what matters, is its teaching staff.

There is every indication that Clarion gets this. The school promises an unqualified commitment to invest in the very best teachers, each qualified to a minimum Masters’ level education [...]

ADNOC Schools – Ruwais Campus (Formerly Glenelg School)

Updated December 2016

Established as the Glenelg School by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in 2010, in 2016-17 the school is undergoing significant, and positive change.

Originally visited by our sister site, WhichSchoolAdvisor.com in early 2013, inspectors found a single school educationally and strategically divided by two competing heads, each separately driving the two Elementary and Middle/High sections of the school under their control.

The rationale for the dual Head/Principal approach was driven in part by the physical design of the school (the Middle/High School section opened one year later in 2011 and, unhelpfully, was built separately, [...]
