“I am so pleased all my hard work paid off” – The English College celebrates almost 50% A*-A results in GCSEs 2023
On a GCSE Results Day that was supposed to bring bad news to many, there were smiles all round at The English College’s (EC) today, with many students shocked at their results – in a positive way.
One student told SchoolsCompared.com that she was “shocked with the grades and extremely proud of my achievements,” following quite exceptional achievement of 3 grade 9s, 1 grade 8 and 5 grade 7s in her GCSE results.
A fellow student, continued:
“It was unexpected, but I was so happy to see my hard work paid off.”
These students’ joy at their results was shared by many others at The English College today. Having been forewarned to expect a perilous plummet in top grades as exam boards switched to pre-pandemic grading schemes, The English College actually managed to improve on its 2019 performance (the last comparable pre-pandemic year) when it comes to A* and A grades, with almost half (49%) of all students receiving these outstanding marks.
While the results overall follow the expected trend – a dip on the Covid years results, and more in line with 2019 results – the College says it is delighted to have performed as well as it has.
Mark Ford – Principal, The English College, told SchoolsCompared:
“We are pleased with the achievements of our Year 11 students; their strong GCSE results are a reflection of their hard work and determination to succeed over the last 2 years. We also recognise the dedicated team of inspirational teachers who have supported them and made these results a reality. The community is enjoying celebrating this wonderful news.”
The EC community is also reeling from some other news today – it was also announced today that International Schools Partnership (ISP) will be buying a majority share in the College, which has been privately owned and a much-loved member of the Dubai education landscape for 30 years. Read more about the ISP and English College partnership here.
But any worrisome feelings about impending change were nonetheless put on hold today, as the College’s teachers reflected on, and congratulated, their students for all their hard work.
Emily Hopkinson – Head of Secondary School told SchoolsCompared:
“I’m incredibly proud of our year 11 students who have worked tirelessly to secure the grades that they have. Each individual success is important and should be vigorously celebrated.
“From those who had a clean sweep of grade 9s (A** equivalent) to those who worked hard to secure their grade 4s in English and maths – each individual student should be recognised and rewarded for what they have achieved.
“I’d like to congratulate our entire community – our students, our teachers and our parents, all of whom have played a part in securing this impressive set of GCSE results.”
Gemma Marar – Assistant Headteacher, Secondary, responsible for KS4, added:
“As one of the most established schools in Dubai we have a history of results of which we are proud. Our students work incredibly hard, are resilient, and aspire to achieve their personal best. All students are supported on their personalised learning pathway by their teachers that maximises their ability to achieve both academically and holistically.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our outstanding students in their remarkable accomplishments, which are a testament to their hard work and dedication.”
The English College Top Achievers
Two students achieved an extraordinary set of results, securing an impressive 19 grade 9’s and 2 grade 8’s collectively. These siblings are the embodiment of excellence at The English College, excelling not only academically but also as accomplished athletes. Their remarkable achievements reflect the school’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded, high achieving students who are a delight to have in our community. | |
The uniqueness of EC lies in the ability to cultivate a warm and inclusive community. Two further students, who joined us at the start of Year 11, are shining examples of the ethos. They have worked diligently with their teachers to upskill on different specifications, positioning themselves for success in their exams this summer. One student achieved 10 GCSEs, all at grades 9-7 and the second achieved 9 GCSEs all at grades 9-7 having previously secured GCSEs at the end of year 10!. Their accomplishments are truly outstanding and a source of immense pride for us. |
