Welcome to our Breakfast briefing on GCSE and IGCSE Results as the world wakes up to the defining point in British education for students globally.

GCSE Results Report Guardian

The UK’s Guardian is reporting on the impact on resits of English and Mathematics as the Examination Boards follow through on UK government instruction to crush grade boundaries to the levels of 2019. Interruptions and challenges during Covid means that these two critical subjects may be failed by large numbers of students, resulting in resits throughout British Sixth Form. The Guardian newspaper questions whether resists are the right approach given that so many students end up in a continuous cycle of resit failure. Read the full report here.

The UK’s Daily Mail is focused on the sheer numbers of students that will be hurt by the move to plunging grade boundaries and reports on the impact of the move t0 pre-Covid grading. Read their report here.

The British tabloid goes on to report on the gender impacts of grade boundaries. Whilst we reported in our coverage of A Level results on the negative impacts on young women caused by the return to 2019 grade boundaries, The Daily Mail sees girls continuing to benefit in GCSE exams from the reduction in top grades – an area in which boys usually are strongest. The Telegraph broadsheet leads on the response of schools to lower entry requirements for British Sixth to recognise that this year’s GCSE results do not reflect a normal year for many students. As we reported in our earlier coverage, we expect the same response from UAE schools as they consider the individual impacts on students as they receive their results today in deciding on whether students can progress to their preferred A Level and BTEC options. Compassion and Fairness are likely to be centre stage in the response of UAE schools. Read the report here. [paywalled]

The National leads on when students can receive their I/GCSE results – but their real story is insider information from schools that the results are much better than expected and many students will not face the drastic reduction in grades that many predicted. You can read their story here.

Our sister site, WhichSchoolAdvisor.com, leads on its definitive reporting of the results from every British School in the UAE. The site is the recognised global resource for examinations data in the UAE. You can see the full data as it unfolds throughout the day here.

We will update this story throughout the day.
