Best Architecture and Design to Inspire Children in a UAE School – The Finalists 2023 – 2024
Architecture matters in schools. Schools that are filled with light. Schools with the space for children to learn. Schools that are designed to inspire children in their internal design and external presence. A thoughtless school design that squashes children into windowless rooms in prefabricated boxes is not how you imagine a school that will inspire its children to reach for the stars.
If you look at almost any of the famous British public schools at home, the usually astonishingly beautiful, or at the least imposing, Grade 1 listed architecture gives a sense of history and trajectory to children almost beyond price. It frames an education. It is not simple in the UAE to have this sort of impact. But nor would we want perhaps this sort of historical framework for our schools that are much more focused on the future.
We all know the schools that are built functionally to a budget, generally box like affairs that do little to move the heart. We also all know too those schools that have been specifically designed to enable an extraordinary education for children that both moves the heart and deliver an environment in which learning is exciting, full of promise and inspiring. This Award is for these schools.
In the category we have focused on a mix of new schools, designed by some of the best architects in the emirates – as well as the developments taking place in our existing schools to drive forward inspiring change and expansion. In some case we have considered developments we know of that are not yet completed because they link to a development that is, in profoundly clever and inspired ways.
In the course of our journalism, and our visits to schools, each has inspired us and we have not left their schools without having a belief in them and their vocation to achieve for their schools and the children, teachers, owners and families that depend on them. Architecture and design, however, emotionally moves each of us differently. The important thing, in our deliberation, is that it does move us, has intellectual substance and delivers for children.
