Arcadia High School Dubai – September 2019 exclusive pre-launch update, confirmation of name

The Arcadia High School Background and Timelines

The Arcadia High School is an all-new, purpose built secondary school which will provide a British, English national Curriculum education to children between age 11 and age 18 through IGCE, BTEC (TBC) and A Level.

The Arcadia High School, like its Primary sister,  The Arcadia Preparatory School, will have a capacity of just 800 children, this offering parents the smallest dedicated Secondary school education for children currently available anywhere in the UAE. For many parents, the draw of a small community school, and one dedicated to secondary provision, will be considerable.

In terms of timelines, the school buildings for the Arcadia High School will be completed in December 2019. Year 7 will soft open in September 2019 and interested parents are able to contact the school today (August 2019).

Initially, for the first two terms, children will be located on the top floor of a separated section of the Arcadia Preparatory School. In the third term, in April 2020, Arcadia children will move to the new Arcadia High School which is sited just across the road from the Arcadia Preparatory school.

The fees for the 2019/20 Year 7 children will remain the same as the current Primary School.

The 2019 YR7 cohort will be two small classes, lead by a dedicated team of Senior school teachers exclusively working with the founding children. The opportunity for children enrolling now is, as a result, a very personal, bespoke, concentrated education plan for each pupil.

Full Year 7 and Year 8 provsion at The Arcadia Academy will open in September 2020.

Arcadia Academy Unique features

Three stand-out, unique features of the school have been announced.

First, and a first for the UAE, is the promise that all Arcadia children will access work placements in one of the more than forty group companies owned by the school’s owners. This sort of access to industry is a standard feature today of education in the United Kingdom which has developed sophisticated apprenticeship programmes which have yet to reach the UAE.

Secondly, the Arcadia High School will include curriculum options in  areas including Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. To date, the only school in the UAE offering BTEC engineering in the UAE is the Outstanding British School of Al Khubairat in Abu Dhabi.

Thirdly, the Arcadia Academy has partnered with the Atlanta, US-headquartered R.E.A.L. Discussion to provide teacher training to Arcadia staff in Atlanta and curricular materials for student use in humanities subjects. The Arcadia High School will be the first UAE based school to implement its discussion-based learning system. More information can be found here.

Arcadia Academy Location

The Arcadia High School, like its slipstream Primary, is located in Jumeirah Village Triangle – exact locations following.  The schools will be literally a stones throw” from each other.

The Arcadia High School building will accommodate a maximum of 800 students. Ground floor classrooms will opening onto open protected spaces, providing students with safe access to play and outside study areas from their classrooms.

Ease of access is promised both on foot from the surrounding community and by vehicle. Vehicle parking will be provided in the basement.

Arcadia High School Facilities

Sports facilities will be outstanding for such a small school to include a swimming pool and basketball court on the roof. A full sized football pitch is located on the ground level.

Arcadia High School Dubai Fees

KHDA fees follow – but we expect a significant commitment to scholarships. Arcadia as a group is deeply committed to bursaries and scholarships and was the first to provide these in the UAE.

Arcadia High School Bottom line? The verdict 2019

We are long-standing admirers of what has been achieved at the, in our view, outstanding Arcadia Preparatory School in Dubai. Our review can be found here.

With the launch of its secondary school, in the shape of the Arcadia High School, we think the offer for parents is a compelling one. This is a school group that invests in its schools and teachers at an extraordinary level given the small scale schooling on offer. Inclusion is absolutely fundamental to the individualised, child centric learning on offer and compassion and care for children is stand-out.

We are waiting for clarification on the final shape of the curriculum – and we do hope that BTEC, given the vocational and industry commitment at the schools already, will be fundamental to the eventual offer. Watch this space.

The opportunities here are rare – and probably unique for families seeking alternatives to the 2000 plus plus capacity schools that increasingly dominate in the UAE. Arcadia has the scale and ethics to make community schooling genuine.

It’s too early of course to recommend a school that has yet to open and our first published site visit for the new school will take place in December 2019.  But if any school in recent years deserves our wishing it well, this surely has to be it. The promise here is inspirational – and important for education as a whole in the UAE.
