Happy schools matter. Creating a happy school for children matters beyond words.
Of all our Awards. this has become the single most contested – and the Award that schools wish most to be recognised for. This passion to be recognised as a happy school for our children is enormously significant. It indicates a sea change in education across the UAE in which a recognition of child happiness is seen as absolutely central to a school’s ability to deliver an outstanding education for children – and one that comes for each child with no fear, no worries… only the joy of being at school and loving learning for its own sake.
Many parents will put the happiness of children at a school above everything, including examination results, school fees and any other number of typically important attributes of what makes an outstanding school. Afterall, we none of us live very long in the scheme of things and school days being some of the happiest days of our lives should, surely, not just be a romanticism we look back on believing against the reality as the years cloud our memories. These should surely actually be the happiest days of our lives, with days at school unencumbered by the responsibilities and pressures of adulthood. Our children should have school lives filled with all the hope, inquisitiveness, discovery and joy that come with youth, before conservatism and risk aversion, as we get older, makes life so much smaller.
The following schools have all passed through a complex mix of school visits, feedback from parents, students, teachers and leadership, editorial voices from across Which Media – and our experience of something absolutely magical at these schools that defies easy reduction to a formula, to become our top-5 schools and Finalists for the 2023-2024 Top Schools Awards for Happiness.
We hope, and it should be read, as quite an accolade – this is one of the very, very most important awards we make each year.
