Hugs, tears and fist pumps: Emotions run high at Dubai British School Emirates Hills’ triumphant GCSE results Day celebrations

by Tabitha BardaAugust 24, 2022

There were hugs, cheers and tears of joy, as students received their GCSE results at Dubai British School Emirates Hills today.

After years of pandemic separation, it was a refreshing change for families to have the opportunity to come into the school to open their results in person as an community – and an absolute joy to witness the back-pats, thumbs-up and woops of happiness as pupils’ hard work was rewarded with well-deserved, strong grades.

Dubai British School Emirates Hills’ (DBS EH) 2022 cohort almost entirely topped the results from 2021, with the average grade per student jumping up to 6.93 from 6.82 last year – an impressive feat, when you consider the fact that this is the first year that exams were externally graded.

Considering the warnings from exam-board regulator Ofqual that marking would be tougher this year, students were perhaps more nervous than they needed to be.

One pupil, Sophie, told SchoolsCompared:

“I feel very relieved, to be honest! I’m excited to be here.”

Another DBS EH students, Annika, added:

“These results were much better than I expected. I was expecting much worse, and I’m pleasantly surprised.”

Sarah Reynolds, Principal of Dubai British School Emirates Hills, told SchoolsCompared:

“Every day our students amaze us with their constant hunger for learning and their desire to succeed. Today is one of those special milestones where they are justly rewarded for their extraordinary efforts and can take pride in what they have achieved.”

“With 64% of grades awarded at 9-7 or equivalent and some students achieving grade 9 across their curriculum these results are exceptional, not just because they represent amazing progress in learning but because they are the product of such dedication and resilience during unprecedented disruption and uncertainty.”

“Our students should forever hold this achievement in their minds as recognition that they are capable of so much as they move on to the next exciting stage of their journey.”

David Potts, Head of Secondary, added:

“Yet again, DBS EH students have shown how they can harness their talents, work ethic and grit to astonishing effect when the pressure is on. This year’s results are a further improvement on our last true exam year in 2019 and even on last year, when grades were internally determined as a result of the pandemic.”

“Our students have demonstrated exceptional perseverance to maintain strong progress throughout these past two difficult years and they now have GCSE results which will propel them towards extraordinary academic and professional futures full of opportunity and possibility. Well done, Year 11.”
