Emirates National School, Abu Dhabi City Campus, Al Nahyan

Established by Presidential Decree, and owned by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs (MOPA), so much is expected of Emirates National School (ENS). Given the brand, cache, stamp of the President, and significant investment, one would expect the school, or what is actually a cluster of schools operating under a single brand, to be setting benchmarks for the sector and shining a light for best practice as beacon schools in the emirate. We would have expected glowing ADEC reports, happy, positive feedback from teachers and glowing reports from students.

In contrast, the schools as a whole have fared badly since the first school, established in Mohammed Bin Zayed City, opened its [...]

Greenfield Community School, Green Community, Dubai Investments Park

Updated January 2017 (SchoolsCompared visit update)

It is worth stating upfront that we think that there are many things that make Greenfield Community School special in the UAE. We also believe that parents should not be diverted from the many exceptional features of the school by the headline grading of the latest KHDA inspection, although there are issues raised which we will address. For a genuinely inclusive, all-through International Baccalaureate education, that can deliver for children of all abilities, we believe that Greenfield Community School sets a key benchmark for the sector.

What makes Greenfield so impressive can be summarised in the following key [...]

Raha International School, Al Raha Gardens, Khalifa City A

As of May 2016, Raha International School [RIS] is one of just three schools in Abu Dhabi to have achieved the “Band A. High Performing. Outstanding” school award from the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) under the education inspectorate’s Irtiqaa programme of independent school inspections. Repton School Abu Dhabi, Shams Abu Dhabi, Al Reem Island

Updated December 2016

Repton School Abu Dhabi [RSAD] is located within Sorouh Real Estate’s residential and business community development, Shams Abu Dhabi, and is the first school to be built on Reem Island.

This review reflects only the Foundation Campus of Repton School Abu Dhabi, a 7000 square metre FS-Primary which will eventually offer only FS to Year 2 slipstream provision to the larger Year 3 – Year 13 Repton Abu Dhabi through school.

Whilst the site for the Upper School of Repton Abu Dhabi is fabulously located adjacent to Sun and Sky Tower, the trade-off is available space. The plot is restricted to around 20,000sqm and as result the architectural brief [...]

Deira International School, Dubai Festival City

Updated December 2016

Deira International School is an extremely impressive school and one that only just misses KHDA “Outstanding” school status. In the majority of areas DIS is already hitting, and in some cases at the very highest level, this standard and, in its combination of outstanding curriculum provision, leadership, academics and whole child development, it’s a school worthy of prospective parents’ attention.

Deira International deserves particular praise for its outstanding parental communication. The school offers the most detailed, comprehensive and transparent online presence of any school we have reviewed in the UAE.

Online information evidences [...]

Emirates International School – Meadows

Updated December 2016

Emirates International School – Meadows [EISM], together with Emirates International School – Jumeirah [EISJ], together comprise the Emirates International School [EIS], although to all intents and purposes, notwithstanding their shared ownership by the Al Habtoor Group, they are separate schools with independent leadership. Our review of the Jumeirah campus can be found here and prospective parents will find significant supplementary information here on the shared framework of both schools.

What is striking about both schools, however, is their very broad similarity in both IB performance and Dubai school inspectorate evaluation. The [...]

Australian International School, Maliha Road, University City

Updated December 2016

The Australian International School [AIS] was the first Australian school to be established in the Middle East and was formed through a partnership between the Al Sharif Investment Trading Group and the Government of Queensland, Australia.

The intention was to provide a school balancing the qualities of the best Western standards of education whilst also nurturing and respecting the culture, faith and language of the people of the UAE and the Arabic world more broadly.

“I chose to build this school for my own children. I realised none of the schools at that time was offering what I was looking for. I wanted the highest quality of education [...]

Emirates International School Jumeirah, Umm Al Sheif

Updated December 2016

Prospective parents should note that Emirates International School Jumeirah [EISJ] is, in fact, located in Umm Al Sheif. The school has also been known variously as Emirates International Private School, Emirates International School and Emirates International School Um Suquim which adds to the confusion.

The school, together with Emirates International School Meadows [EISM], together comprise the Emirates International School [EIS], although to all intents and purposes, notwithstanding their shared ownership by the Al Habtoor Group, they are separate schools with independent leadership.

Parents historically have chosen between the two based [...]

GEMS World Academy, Abu Dhabi

Updated December 2016

It is rare to find a dedicated International Baccalaureate KG, let alone a GEMS school – or one situated in the heart of Abu Dhabi. Little wonder GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi[GWAAD] is over-subscribed. The school as you would expect from a dedicated 4 to 10 years elementary is inherently one with considerable warmth, and the leadership of its historic Principal, Jay Roy, was graded “absolutely exceptional” according to independent feedback to our sister site, whichschooladvisor.com in founding the school. The new Principal (September 2016), Linda LaPine, is by all accounts equally driven, bringing with her a new focus on building a “home away [...]

GEMS World Academy, Al Barsha South

Updated April 2017

GEMS World Academy – Dubai (GWA) is a PreK to Grade 12 International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) accredited school. GWA offers an all-through IB education from the Primary Years Program [PYP], through Middle Years Program [MYP] to the full Diploma Program [DP] for students aged between 3 and 18 years.

As of April 2017, we have been advised that the school will also offer the alternative International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IB CP) from the 2017-2018 academic year. This is an extremely welcome development and something that we believe is a critical element of IB post-16 schooling in order that schools can meet the broadest [...]

Al Mamoura School, Al Nahyan

Updated December 2016

Al Mamoura School is an intrinsic part of ADEC’s Future Schools Programme, the ambitious project to build 100 world class schools by 2020 to transform education in the Emirate.

Al Mamoura seeks to set the benchmark for single-sex, girls only secondary provision in the Capital whilst primary phases will be fully co-educational.

In structure, Al Mamoura will see Aldar’s KHDA “Outstanding A1” Al Mushrif Primary re-branded to Al Mamoura; its students will move from their current location within Aldar’s equally exceptional “Outstanding A1” Al Bateen School. Al Bateen itself will serve as the automatic slipstream for boys at secondary [...]

Lycée Français Jean Mermoz, Business Bay, Al Quoz

Updated December 2016

Prospective parents should note that Lycée Français Jean Mermoz is due to open in September 2017.

Jean Mermoz (9 December 1901 – 7 December 1936) was a French Aviator, explorer and adventurer whose association with French schools worldwide stems, in part, from help that he received from a teacher as a young man of 19 to achieve his ambitions to fly. A French (and Argentine) hero, he was known as a pioneer in aviation, in particular in flying unexplored routes between South America and Africa, losing his life eventually in a plane crash over the Atlantic from which neither his body, nor the plane were ever recovered.

His courage, ambition and [...]

Kent College Dubai, Meydan City, Nad Al Sheba

Updated April 2017

Kent College Dubai is the second campus of Kent College, Canterbury, United Kingdom. The school is insistent that it is neither a franchise, nor a school run simply under a brand – Kent College is the “real deal”. The school is managed in partnership with the UK as a second campus and the aim is that, to all intents and purposes, children attending the Dubai campus should experience the Canterbury experience – and changing between schools, when and if required, should be relatively seamless.

Culturally the UK context provides for a caring Christian family community based on a Methodist school foundation “with religious education a strong [...]

American International School in Abu Dhabi (AISA), Muroor, Al Reehan

Updated December 2016

The “American International School in Abu Dhabi” (AISA) was established by ESOL Education in 1995 to provide the local and expatriate residents of Abu Dhabi with a high quality American education, based on American standards. This only tells half the story, however, as AISA rarely also offers a parallel international curriculum via the International Baccalaureate at both primary (PYP) and, at secondary level, through its provision of the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD), the latter targeted at its top 25% of students.

ESOL Education also manage the American Universal School (UAS), Deira International School (DIS) and INSPIRE Children’s [...]

Al Bateen Secondary School, Al Manseer

“What really makes this school wonderful? Our students. ADEC “Outstanding” rating notwithstanding, it is our students that are the heartbeat of the school – academic, confident, independent, caring, open minded, tolerant, balanced, creative and high achieving. Al Bateen students are locally educated; internationally competitive.”

David Hutson, Principal, Al Bateen Secondary School [quoted in whichschooladvisor, 2016]

Opened on its (fabulous) purpose built site in September 2011, Al Bateen Secondary School is hugely innovative, combining the best of a British (English National) curriculum to (I)GCSE with the choice for students, post-16, of [...]
