UAE schools consider cancelling social events due to ‘global situation’. KHDA comments. Exclusive

by Editorial TeamOctober 26, 2023

UAE schools are considering cancelling non-essential events in response to the current global situation.

This follows moves by property developers Emaar and Nakheel to suspend community events due to the current global circumstances and their impact on the worldwide community.

Several concerts have also been cancelled in Dubai, including performances by Amr Diab, Sean Paul and TI and Macklemore, although the organisers did not specify a reason for the cancellations.

With Halloween imminent on 31 October, some parents have been asking whether schools should reconsider their celebrations in light of the events happening across the world.

One school, Dove Green Private School, has taken the decision to cancel its Halloween activities this Saturday.

In a post on social media, Dove Green Private School wrote:

“Following extensive dialogue with our families and key stakeholders in the DGPS community, the decision has been taken to cancel the children’s Halloween event at DGPS on Saturday, 28 October 2023, due to the current global situation,

“We understand that many members of our school community were looking forward to this special event, and this decision has not been taken lightly. While all DGPS events are organised first and foremost with our children in mind, our thoughts are with those affected by the recent events, and we respect those who do not feel that it is appropriate for the event to go ahead as planned.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this cancellation may cause, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation during these extraordinary circumstances.”

Are schools allowed to cancel events? KHDA official comment

A source close to the situation told SchoolsCompared.com that schools have been instructed by certain authorities not to cancel events, however we have been unable to verify this claim.

The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which regulates Dubai schools, has not made a public announcement on the issue. A spokesperson for the KHDA could not confirm what communication has been sent out to schools on the topic, but shared the following exclusive official statement with SchoolsCompared.com:

In line with KHDA regulations, any optional activity or event taking place within the school premises requires prior approval from KHDA.”

This serves as a timely reminder for Dubai schools to ensure that all activities meet with KHDA requirements in the current climate, as ever.

This is a sensitive and ongoing situation. We will update our coverage subject to further confirmation.
