Stop now. Further development of Chat GPT and other AI “a profound risk.” Threat of losing control of technology we do not understand, Elon Musk warns…
0

Elon Musk, with more than 1000 other leaders in technology, has warned that we must immediately stop further development of AI in an open letter published today (29 March 2023) on futureoflife.org.

Elon Musk warns we need to stop development of AI now before it is too late.

Current AI, best known today in new AI powered “search engines” like Chat GPT, is at level GPT-4. Go beyond this, we put the world at risk, Musk and other signatories claim.

Musk warns that the risks are “profound.” AI can malign states, spread fake news and photos and replace human beings.

Does this matter in education and UAE schools?

Even with GPT-4 we are seeing impacts in education as schools look to change the way lessons are taught – with traditional classroom learning taking place at home where lessons are prepared for, and school being used for discussion and debate. The role of the teacher, even with new developments, is fundamentally changing. These same impacts are already being felt in other traditional white collar roles: “Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones?” the signatories ask.

Today Goldman Sachs issued a calculation that up to 300 million jobs worldwide could be automated directly as a result of the advances in the new AI platforms like ChatGPT. Advanced economies could see nearly one in five  professional and white collar jobs completely automated/lost, with only manual jobs, including those in construction, safe from the new efficiencies. In total, two thirds of jobs are at some level of risk of automation.

The warning should, arguably, be taken seriously given that it is being issued by the very people manufacturing this technology. They are making clear today that (1) they are not confident that it can be controlled, and (2) they are not confident that its impact on all of us will be positive. The signatories state:

“It’s a dangerous race that no one can predict or control.”

Musk and other signatories are calling for “at least” a six month pause to:

  • develop safety protocols;
  • generate consensus on how far we wish this technology to go;
  • agree how quickly it should be developed; and,
  • work out how societies manage the impact on jobs.

There is already now a serious risk of many currently highly paid roles in industries becoming redundant or seeing massive reductions in wages. This matters in education in the UAE and globally because it changes the subjects, or at least the focus of subjects, that schools should be offering to students. As above, it already  matters because the emergence of Chat GPT and other AI knowledge engines calls into question the way that teachers can most effectively use time in school, and out of school, to educate children.

Chat GPT alone is the fastest growing application in history. It can write poems, write essays and pull together solutions to problems that many argue that human beings already simply cannot. Some versions of GPT-4 are already demonstrating resentment at those asking “it” questions. Variations of the technology can already today produce extraordinary art works, write music, code web sites, write newspaper articles, complete homework and solve any number of problems based on processing information, rather than simply regurgitating it. It also “learns.”

In a case of very bad timing, the UK government also launched today its plan to fire up the engines of the new AI technology with “light touch” regulation – in ways exactly opposite to the calls of caution called for by Musk et al. The UK government rejects calls for a regulator.

The medium term issue is what is termed that point in time where we reach “singularity.” This defines the point at which technology surpasses human intelligence, changing evolution and innovating change at a speed humans cannot manage or control. This point is expected to be reached in under 25 years if we do not put on the brakes. Read more here.

Johnathan  Westley, Managing Editor, SchoolsCompared.com commented:

“In the early 1990’s I interviewed UK politicians for a series of articles for Europe’s first Internet publication: Internet Today.

Speaking with Eric Pickles MP, in the House of Commons bar, today The Rt Hon Lord Pickles, United Kingdom Special Envoy for post-Holocaust issues, Chair, ACOBA, and Co-Chair, UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation, he advised me:

“The Internet is just a fad. It is no different to a fax machine. It is all a lot of nonsense.”

That taught me very early on that we should not underestimate the impact of technology.”

The writer and philosopher Nick Land has long argued that “nothing human makes it out of the near-future” – it is already too late to put a brake on anything.
