A Guide To Private Tutoring Companies In Dubai

by Jane TalbotJune 21, 2018

How can private tutoring benefit your child?

Whether hiring a private tutor as a supplement to a child’s regular school education is beneficial or not has been hotly contested between parents, teachers and private tutoring organisations over the years. With several questions being raised as to whether tutoring actually has any significant impact on a student’s grades.

For example, the London University Institute of Education team found those students who received two years of private maths tutoring prior to sitting their maths GCSE only scored an average of half a grade higher than those who did not; suggesting that tutoring offers no significant increase in educational attainment.

However more recent studies extoll private tutoring’s myriad of virtues, with findings advocating that supplementary tutoring means customised education that can be specifically focused on subjects that the learner finds challenging.

The one-to-one setting of tutoring also means the freedom to ask questions without reticence and with constant feedback.

The additional support can help children with special educational requirements such as ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, to help them to keep up with their peers.

And then there is improved academic test results.  Professor Kurt VanLehn at the Arizona State University published the finding of his 2011 study that found that, contrary to the London study, private tutoring increases a student’s results by one and a half grades.

The difference between a high C and a low A could hugely influence the possibility of acceptance into the preferred university.

With findings such as these combined with the intense level of competition for coveted college and university spots, the recent increase in the number of students opting to stay ahead of the pack by seeking extra learning assistance is understandable.

While private tuition has always been a staple of the UAE’s education scene, it is now becoming part and parcel of UK student life too. One in four school children in receive private tutoring, with the vast majority seeking assistance with the three core subjects, Math (77%), English (55%) and Science (30%).

It’s also an industry now valued at some UKP 6 billion (approximately 30m AED).

In the UAE

While tutoring has always been part of the education landscape in the UAE, specifically in the Asian school sector, there has been a significant upsurge here too – across curricula.

Johanna Burke enlisted the aid of a private maths tutor for her daughter when she was in Year 9.

“We sent out daughter to a private tutoring centre in Dubai when she began to struggle with maths in school. Her maths did improve but most importantly so did her general confidence in the classroom, which resulted in an improvement in her grades in more than just that subject.”

Katherine O’Hare had similar hopes when she sent her son to a personalised tutoring centre before he began secondary curriculum.

“When I felt that my child started to struggle to gain the concepts being explained in school, I felt that I needed help to boost his confidence at his current level and to give him an edge leading into the next academic year. He began private tuition. The one-on-one gave him the time and space to process and practice his skills. It was definitely a worthwhile investment in his future.”

With the popularity of personalised tutoring on the rise the Knowledge and Human Development Centre (KHDA) introduced licensing requirements and developed strict parameters for tutoring centres in Dubai. This is to ensure the maintenance of high standards and for the safety of the students. Using unapproved and unlicensed private tutors outside of regulated companies is illegal in the UAE.
