“Jumeirah College is the academic flagship of the GEMS network and one of the leading schools in Dubai, with students achieving exceptional results and moving to some of the best universities around the world. We celebrate the achievements of our students in all areas, not solely confined to academic success, and continually work to achieve the College vision of being a vibrant learning community, nurturing happy, confident and accomplished students who, through a commitment to academic and personal excellence, progress beyond limits.” Simon O Connor, Principal Jumeirah College. July 2017.
Stand-out breadth of provision at A Level is for us the defining feature of Jumeirah College – and so telling of a school that invests in meeting the ambitions, needs, gifts and interests of its children.
Arts and Humanities subject choice at A Level is outstanding. A KHDA Outstanding school and deservedly so, it’s interesting that Jumeirah College does not carry the GEMS brand, yet is the school which showcases just what GEMS can achieve when it empowers its exceptional school leadership, in this case, Simon O’Connor – a Principal who has received exceptional independent feedback from staff, students and parents in 2017.
Pride in the school from its students is another stand-out feature. Results are exceptional, but at this Tier 1 level of schooling it it much more about what happens away from examination tables. Here the school’s richness of academic offer is matched by serious investment in the broader Arts and Sport – and a culture that understands that not all children can be brilliant at everything.
This sensitivity results in the happiness of children so visible at the school. It is about finding and nurturing the special gifts of every child, not pushing children into places they do not wish to travel for the sake of statistics. “Child first” best summarises the fundamental ethic of the school. Perhaps that is why it is so understated in its outward communications. It’s primary concern is the school-within.
We say this, in spite of the fact this is also the only GEMS Education school that has continued to publish in full, and stand by, its examination results. Other GEMS schools post a group average.
We think it should, and could, shout even more. This is a fabulous, in many ways remarkable, school that, we believe, is securely deserving of its top-12 place in the Best Schools in Dubai and Abu Dhabi of 2017.
