UAE A Level, BTEC and GCSE Results 2021. The Full Story. Part 2.

UAE A Level, BTEC and GCSE Results 2021 Broadcasting live! Rolling News and Commentary – scroll down for news, analysis and commentary as it happens throughout the day.

5:00pm: Tuesday 10th August 2021: And that’s a wrap. It’s been a long day – but in many ways an historic one. No Student, or indeed school, has had an easy year – in many cases it has fallen little short of catastrophic by any normal standards of the education that we all expect to Sixth Form students to have access to. In almost every case, it is the rounded edges of education, in areas like the Performing Arts, Sport and ECAs that have taken a direct hit, but it is the interactivity and cultural aspects of student and school life that have probably wrought the most shocks. Mental health issues and worries have forced many of us, including those many years in age advanced of students in Year 13, have resulted in us facing issues and dilemmas we never could have envisaged – or would wish to. The achievements of students, families and schools this year represents an inflection point in education that will have broader impacts that may very well not be known long into the years ahead. Already, to take a simple issue, serious consideration is being given to moving A Levels from the letter grading system to a numerical one (like GCSEs) to create some sort of re-set from the impacts of grade inflation. For those who worry that this year’s results mean less than previous years, we argue they, in fact, mean so much more. This is true in no small part too of heir grading – many believe that grading students on the basis of teacher assessment rather than examination grades and quotas is an infinitely more accurate means of awarding qualifications not less. It is on that note that all of us should thank teachers – they have been required to take on definitive assessment responsibilities (and responsibilities is the key word here) that were never anticipated part of their role. That they have Cleary fought so hard for their students across UAE schools speaks volumes about just how amazing hey are – and how grateful to them all of us should be. Many students over the following days will face issues on the availability of university courses. The number this will effect is unclear – but Medicine and Dentistry are particularly hit. The hope must be that, whilst UAE students learn in private schools – they do so with no alternative state sector. The current moves by universities to positively discriminate in favour of state educated students should not impact on students in the UAE on that basis. On the basis of all of us at SchoolsCompared.com and WhichSchoolAdvisor.com all that is left to say on the mater is an extraordinarily big “well done!” To close we finish up with news on GEMS Education and their wrap-up of the extraordinary and much-deserved success of students across their British schools.

GEMS Metropole School – Motor City (MTS)

Nav Iqbal, Principal/CEO, GEMS Metropole School – Motor City said:

“I am extremely pleased to announce and celebrate GEMS Metropole School’s strongest ever A-level examination results. I am delighted to say that there has been significant improvement since the previous academic year. This is testament to our hard-working students who, despite the challenges faced during the pandemic, performed exceptionally well.

The results of our inclusive cohort of students show that 41% achieved an A*-A grade, 73% achieved A*– B, and 89% passed with grades A*– C. This improvement is particularly impressive with a growing cohort. Our three highest achieving students gained three A*s and a B, two A*s and two As, and three A*s. Standout subject performances were recorded in Chemistry, Drama, Art and Economics, and we have seen an increase in the number of A*-A grades this year, especially in Maths (+48%) and Chemistry (+29%).

We are proud of all our Year 13 students who have been determined and dedicated throughout their studies. Our leavers are now on their way to achieving great things, and we look forward to hearing about their future university and employment success. A special mention also goes to our fantastic teaching staff, whose commitment has ensured students have felt continuously supported and were able to achieve their best. GEMS Metropole is a strong place for academic excellence and exceeding potential. It is a special time for our school and we are proud of what is being achieved and what will continue to be achieved.”

Stand out students from Cranleigh School Abu Dhabi include:

  • Lydia Sanz Lozano: Involvement in IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency), Leadership Roles within the Sixth Form, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi Sixth Form Scholar, Lydia achieved A* for her EPQ,  3A* at A Level. Lydia will study at New York University Abu Dhabi.

Speaking with SchoolsCompared.com, Miss Sanz Lozano responded:

What are you most proud of from your A Level studies and why?

“I am most proud of the experiences that have come from my A Level studies, how my classroom learning translated to practical change in my community. For example, the completion of an economics EPQ, discussing the macroeconomic impacts of renewable energy, allowed me to find a passion for youth advocacy for change. I was therefore able to participate in a number of IRENA and youth led events, as the first Youth Representative, an invited speaker and most recently as moderator.”

What new talent or skill have you discovered about yourself throughout your A Levels?

“The rigour and challenge of A Levels have taught me the power of self-confidence and the importance of three main attributes: dedication, resilience, and passion. These past two years have allowed me to deeply explore subject areas that I was truly passionate about, and develop myself as a passionate and orientated learner, who wished to draw importance from a multitude of disciplines. My A Level studies have also pushed me to learn about who I am as an individual, and how I can contribute to make a change in this world. “

What/ who are you most thankful for this year and why?

“I am thankful to everyone who has been a part of my A Level journey: my teachers, my classmates, and my family. I want to thank my teachers for constantly challenging me in lessons, and for guiding me to both academic and personal success. I have always enjoyed the Harkness style of teaching, which was at the centre of my A Level experience, as the interesting conversations and debates I had with my classmates, allowed me to become more aware and appreciative of different perspectives. My family has always helped me, and I am grateful that they have never failed to support me in my greatest endeavours.”

  • Jaiden Matharu: Leadership Roles within the Sixth Form, Jaiden achieved A* for his EPQ, 3 A*at A level. He will study at New York University Abu Dhabi.

Mr Matharu said:

“The days leading up to results day were filled with nervous excitement and anticipation to see what my hard work achieved.

However, it wasn’t really about my grades; I knew I gave everything I had – my results would display my best efforts.

That is what I’m most proud of.

Although I am overjoyed with my grades, I knew that no matter the outcome, I would be happy – I worked the hardest I could.

I am grateful to all of my subject teachers and staff who helped guide me throughout my sixth form experience, and especially thankful to Ms Kelleher & Mr McConnell-Wood for helping me not only as an Economics student but also as a person.

I am incredibly proud that I have been part of the Cranleigh community! Thank you.”

Michael Wilson, Principal, Cranleigh School Abu Dhabi said:

“I am relieved and thrilled that the Year 13 A level results at Cranleigh Abu Dhabi this year are reflective of probably the most talented cohort that I have come across in my teaching career.

I hope that the results will compensate a little for the very different and difficult last two years at school.

They have worked incredibly hard, been resilient beyond their years and most importantly looked after each other and the school community as a whole. I could not be more proud of them and they will make an impact wherever they go.”

Damien Ward, Vice Principal Academic, Cranleigh School Abu Dhabi commented:

“Cranleigh Abu Dhabi are delighted with the efforts of all students completing external qualifications, particularly those transitioning to universities.

The difficulties of these past 18 months are well documented and this cohort of Year 13 students have done extremely well by any comparison.

Whilst the grades are strong they only tell a fraction of the story; while coping with the demands of multiple teaching models and timetable restrictions these students have drawn on an extensive catalogue of skills to maintain consistency and calmness to produce robust evidence to secure the grades needed to move onto their universities of choice. My appreciation also goes out to all the staff who contributed countless hours to support the evidence gathering process.

Their dedication underpins the success we enjoy as a school.”

Atharv Pramod Naik, Students, GEMS Cambridge International School said:

“I just graduated from Cambridge International School – Dubai and I’ve been here since Year 7, so that’s seven years now.

I am really happy with my results; I got 5 A*s.

It’s really been a joint effort from the teachers, the school and the extended GEMS family, and I’d really like to thank particularly my teachers over the last couple of years, the senior CIS management as well as the community that we’ve built over here – it’s really a wonderful place to be.

Obviously 5A*s in five subjects is a bit rigorous. I took Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and I was studying Further Maths independently. The teachers were here to help me with any questions or concepts I didn’t really get a hang of, and over time it’s just a matter of compartmentalising your work and putting in a bit of commitment. Then everything falls into place.

I’m really grateful to be starting my Master in Engineering at Imperial College London in a month’s time – another wonderful community for me to be a part of, and I’m really excited to dive into academia and the industry.”

Omar Wael Shendy, a student at GEMS Metropole School said:

“I got 3A*s in my A-levels, in Biology, Chemistry and Maths.

I am planning to go to University of Wollongong for Mechatronics Engineering.

I am very pleased with how things turned out.

Almost everyone at this school, especially the teachers, inspired me to work hard and get to where I am now.”

Gaweed Elmogy, a student at GEMS Metropole School continued:

“I am going to NYU Abu Dhabi next year to study Mechanical Engineering.

I was inspired by my teachers; they helped me a lot.

I worked hard and they pushed me hard to achieve my grades.”

Paula Ignacio, a student at GEMS Metropole School concluded:

“I got A*, A*, A in Chemistry, Biology and Maths.

I’m really happy with my results.

Leanne Fridd, Principal of Safa Community School told SchoolsCompared.com:

“These results are a reflection of the grit, determination and hard work within the school community.

This has been a very challenging time, which our school community has faced head on, showing innovation and compassion to ensure our students were able to achieve their true potential.

The strong retention of our staff as well as effective recruitment as a growing secondary school, led by Michael Davies, our Head of Secondary, has been exceptional and this shows in our results.

Our Senior Students have set the benchmark for the rest of our school community, and have continued to prove what excellent role models they are.

I would like to congratulate the staff, our parental community and most importantly our students, for exceptional academic achievement despite facing such an adverse year.

We can’t wait to see where these results take you all next!”

Michael Davies, Head of Secondary, Safa Community School continued:

“Acknowledgement must go to our school community who have overcome all obstacles and difficulties faced over the past 12 months.

They have quite simply been amazing!

As a school where possible, we entered our students into external exams, such was our confidence in their ability, and the students desire to face new challenges.

All of our students outperformed their expected grades, with our Head Boy and Girl leading the way. Between the two of them, Farouk and Miral amassed a staggering 2 A* and 6 A’s. I would like to thank all of our school community publicly.”

Ms. Jenni O’Donnell, Head of the Sixth Form and Teacher of GCSE and A Level Mathematics, Safa Community School commented:

“I am beaming with pride as I review the grades attained by this outstanding cohort of students.

We were determined to ensure the highest standards in the validity of our data and so our students were given the mammoth task to perform during multiple assessment cycles throughout the year. Their maturity and determination to succeed has been witnessed by our Year 12 students and has inspired them to also aim for the stars, obtaining equally impressive results in their AS assessments.

I am delighted that our students have met the conditions of their university offers and will now be able to move on to the university and course of their choice to complete their education. It is an auspicious beginning for the scholastic achievements of our Sixth Form and one that I know our future cohorts will want to better as they make their own mark academically.“

Mr. Mathew Ashton, Head of Pastoral and Teacher of GCSE, A-Level Geography, Safa Community School said:

“We send our first cohort of students off to university, wishing them all the very best for the next phase of their lives, we know you will be great.

Our Year 12 students have given themselves the perfect platform as they move into their final year of schooling. We look forward to working with them next year and watch their successes.”

Gemma Thornley, Secondary Principal of GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail told SchoolsCompared.com:

“I could not be prouder of the exceptional results our students have achieved.

They have shown resilience and perseverance in a time of great uncertainty and speculation about what the future holds.

I know that they will leave the Academy with a sense of accomplishment, knowing they have done their very best.

We wish them every success and cannot wait to see what they go on to achieve.”

12:35pm: Tuesday 10th August 2021: The UK’s Daily Telegraph is quoting John Nield, a former chief examiner at AQA, who states that British government ministers had “washed their hands” of exam results by leaving the grading process up to teachers.

“They have given up the reins of the whole thing. Because of the criticism they had last year, they have given up the responsibility.

Yes, students have had a horrible two years educationally, but they know where they are at in the pecking order and they will be looking at the results saying ‘that’s not right, we don’t deserve that. It is belittling and demeaning to students to think they will accept this ‘everyone gets an A*’ approach.”

As we have written below – we do not agree and in fact think the opposite. Looking at the global press today, this is a small, somewhat Luddite voice that comes in our view across as nothing shot of petulant.

Rachel de Souza, the Children’s Commissioner for England, gets the right approach.

“Pupils opening their results on Tuesday should have their achievements celebrated instead of facing debates over the process that had led to their grades. This is a generation of children who don’t need a dissection of the past but our serious focus on their future as they take further steps in their education.”

Mark Leppard MBE, Headmaster, The British School Al Khubairat told us:

“Sixth Form students across the globe deserve a huge amount of credit for passing qualifications through this Covid period.

This has been a Sixth Form experience like no other, with much of what students have come to take for granted taken away from them overnight; and it is therefore only right to be incredibly proud of the results achieved.

Our BSAK students have shown so much grit and determination over the past 18 months, and it is their endeavour and resilience, as well as the collective support from home and school, that has seen them shine.

I salute this spirit and dedication, as it has allowed our students to once again exceed expectations, even in the most challenging of times.”

Head of Secondary, Teresa Woulfe, The British School Al Khubairat continues:

“We are really proud of this group of students, and delighted with their incredible achievements despite the disruptions over the last 18 months.

They richly deserve their results as they are a reflection of their hard work, adaptability and resilience.

As a school community, we have worked hard to ensure that our students received the very best experience both Face to Face or through Distance Learning.

I would also like to take the opportunity to celebrate and thank our staff and our parents who have adapted their own practices and work arrangements to support each and every BSAK student, enabling them to move forward with the next stage of their educational journey.”

12:26pm: Tuesday 10th August 2021: Latest from UCAS. A record 395,770 students have been accepted on their first choice full-time undergraduate course in the UK, up 8% from 365,500 in 2020. Overall, 388,230 people from across the UK alone have had places confirmed. This is an 8% increase on results day last year.

12:24pm: Tuesday 10th August 2021: Really simple (as you might expect) explanation of Clearing from the Sun – good journalism:

“Students are able to use Clearing if they missed out on a university place, including if:

  • They are applying after June 30
  • They didn’t receive any offers (or none that they wanted to accept)
  • They didn’t meet the conditions of their offers
  • They have paid the multiple choice application fee of £25
  • They have declined their confirmed place using the “decline my place” button in UCAS’ Track

The process works by helping students find out which university courses still have places remaining.

Hopefuls are able to search for a course against the subject they are interested in, or the university they want to head to.

Clearing is a way for universities to fill any places they still have empty, while applicants who did not receive an offer have another chance at getting into university.”

A longer more comprehensive explanation of Clearing can be found from UCAS direct here.

The Sun’s complete live blog can be found here – it’s to-the-point simplicity is a great strength. If you have questions you may find answers as it seeks to answer key questions from students and worried parents.

12:15pm: Tuesday 10th August 2021: An interesting summary from the official UK government blog on this year’s results. Key is understanding that:

“Students have been assessed only on what they have been taught, not what they may have missed.”

The full blog can be accessed here – worth reading.

12:11pm: Tuesday 10th August 2021: Horizon International School has announced its results for the 2021 cohort of 11 students.  28% of awards were at A*, 64% A-A, 91% at A-C with 100% of awards at A*-E.
