Editorial statement: Russian War against Ukraine

by Jon WestleyFebruary 25, 2022

As an educational portal we carry some responsibility. Our remit, however, is not political – at least in so far as politics does not impact on schools, education and children. The aggression of Putin, and the Russian state apparatus, against the Ukrainian people, and the Western world, is not within our remit. We thought very carefully before issuing this statement.

However, many of us, today, are being faced with the challenge of young children terrified about the possibility of a third world war.

Many of us are waking up to children that are frightened. Many of us have woken up to children in tears.

In the digital age, in a world populated by seemingly speed-of-light communications across the likes of Twitter, Facebook and Tik Tok, we have lost, as parents, and schools, to a large degree, the ability to immunise our children against the knowledge and impacts of threat.

Today, schools and parents across the UAE are being presented with questions to which there are no definitive answers, for our children, except four that we surely can agree on, without argument:

First, the actions of Putin and the Russian state are abhorrent and an outrage against all that is good and decent in the world.

Second, that the Western World and its allies are united in placing a protective ring around NATO – and doing all it can to prevent war and support the Ukrainian people and children.

Third, that the UAE is a long-standing, very close friend to Ukraine, NATO and the Western world and is doing all it can to prevent war and see a return peace.

Fourth, that goodness will, and must, prevail.

In the Digital age, flags have never been more powerful. Pictures often speak louder than words.

The Ukrainian flag has started appearing, inspirationally, across social media in places it never did – a small act, a statement, of solidarity with people who have been horrifically attacked without provocation.

A statement that they are not alone.

Small things like this, do make a difference. Sometimes we simply cannot be silent.
