Brighton College Abu Dhabi wows parents with A Level results and Students share excitement with plans for Oxbridge and setting the world of dentistry alight

Brighton College Abu Dhabi has announced this year’s achievements on A Level Results Day with praise for the way its students have shared in each other’s success.

The Top Schools Award winning school is known for its significant investment in whole child development and the ethical underpinnings of an education to prepare students for making a difference in the world and giving back as they leave the school and embark on future study and careers. This year’s results have seen stand-out acceptances by top universities including the University of Oxford and a remarkable two students have achieved places on prestigious dentistry courses at the University of Leeds and University of Liverpool – a first for the school.

A Level results have bettered the grades achieved in 2019, with more than half of the college’s pupils achieving A* to A grades and 73.7% securing A* to B grades in this year’s examinations.

Helen Wilkinson, Head Mistress of Brighton College Abu Dhabi said to SchoolsCompared:

“We are incredibly proud of the Class of 2022 for their resilience, focus and determination which is exemplified by these richly deserved results.

Having sat public exams for the first time since 2019, this positive increase in results that our pupils have achieved this year is a true testament to their hard work and dedication.

Not only have our pupils achieved outstanding results, but they are also well-rounded Brightonians whose contributions to our own community, and to the world beyond our walls, have been a privilege to encourage and applaud.

We congratulate them all, and our excellent staff who have helped them to achieve these impressive results through their creativity and passion for education.”

Brighton College Abu Dhabi has also, rarely in UAE schools, published its value-added score, one revealing the degree to which the school has been able to improve its students results over that expected by their flightpath on joining the school. With very bright students, high examination results are expected – but the measure of a school’s true contribution to a child’s education is much better revealed by its value-add score than exam league tables. Brighton College achieved an average a value-add for its students of+0.819 – this in practice meaning that it helped its students score an additional grade higher than would be expected. Value-add is closely looked at by school regulators, including ADEK, in awarding Outstanding school status – an accolade achieved by Brighton College Abu Dhabi.

Pupils across the UAE have overcome two years of disruption and uncertainty – and this, combined with UK qualifications regulator Ofqual’s tightening of grade boundaries, saw many students worried about the impact on this year’s results – the first in two years with examinations.

A quarter (25.7%) of all grades achieved by Brighton College Abu Dhabi were A*, more than half (53.1%) of all grades achieved A* to A grades, 73.7% of grades A* to B – and 97.8% of the grades achieved were A* to C.

83% of UAE national pupils at the school achieved A* to B grades – a significant achievement.

Ashna Chaturvedi told SchoolsCompared:

“I was beyond ecstatic to have received these results and most importantly, confirmation of my place to read Law at the University of Oxford.

Sitting our A Levels was never going to be easy, but to have done so despite the pandemic related disruption is truly a feat that all of us should be proud of.

A lot of hard work, dedication and sacrifice went into the past two years.

These grades definitely would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my parents, my teachers who were always willing to go above and beyond to help us, and my friends who have made my sixth form experience so memorable.

I am so proud of the achievements of our cohort and I wish everyone the very best in all our future endeavours.”

Amala Ayyar continued:

“Completing our first set of proper exams was no easy feat for our year group, which is why I was so relieved to see that all those hours of revision had paid off.

I am so thankful to have had the support of my teachers and peers over these past two years, and am really looking forward to starting uni life at UCL soon!”

Parineeta Gupta, one of the two Brighton College Abu Dhabi pupils who will now go on to study Dentistry exclaimed:

“My journey through sixth form has been a rollercoaster ride, with Covid all around and, not having sat our GCSE, it wasn’t easy. However, looking back I wouldn’t change anything; I think today it has all been worth it.

The biggest challenge I faced was juggling between online, and in-person, learning. It became really difficult to keep up with the course. However, with all the support from my teachers, and after school extra classes, I was able to overcome it.

I couldn’t be happier – and now I can, finally, start my journey as a dental student.”
