BSME

British Schools of the Middle East was formed in 1982 with the aim of providing “a quality-assured network of schools, helping Heads and Teachers share best practice and keep abreast of the latest educational developments”. They also offer a range of extra curricula activities that are designed to unite students across the Middle East.

The purpose of organising these events is to offer children the opportunity to represent their school, to connect and engage with children from other countries and to participate in both competitive and non-competitive festival arenas. Sporting events are, for many schools, the culmination of months of training effort and the pinnacle of the sporting year.

Individual sport tournaments – including netball, football, touch rugby, golf, swimming and triathlons – are offered across the course of the year and feed well in to the multi-sport highlight of the year, the BSME Games. The Games offer all member schools the opportunity to compete against other schools in the region and are the largest event its nature in the Middle East.

BSME members in the UAE include 14 schools from Abu Dhabi, individual schools from Ajman, Al Ain, Fujeirah and Ras Al Khaimah, 4 schools in Sharjah and 30 schools from Dubai.

As would be expected, the schools that rule in the ADISSA and DASSA leagues also tend to be the most successful UAE schools during BSME competitions, with BISAD, BSAK and Brighton College AD among the winners and Horizon English School and Safa British School from Dubai both performing well in the Under 11 competitions.

The Dubai-based Secondary schools do not seem to be strong participants in the BSME leagues – focusing instead on the DASSA league.
