CICSE and CBSE results 2022: ‘Batch of Stoics’ UAE students celebrate exam success
UAE schools are celebrating exam success this week in the wake of some outstanding CBSE and CICSE results for many of the country’s students.
The CBSE Class 10 and Class 12 exam results were finally revealed on Friday 22 July, after a nail-biting wait that saw students and teachers on tenterhooks following reports of delays in results being released.
Meanwhile the CISCE Board’s Grade 12 ISC results were announced yesterday on Sunday 24 July, following the earlier release of the Grade 10 ISC results on 17 July.
The majority of students at Indian-curriculum schools in the UAE take the CBSE exams, while a small number of Dubai schools offer the CISCE Board option.
India’s Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared that the overall pass percentage globally across all subjects for the Grade 12 exams was 92.71%, with a total of 1,435,366 candidates sitting the exams. Across the 198 CBSE schools outside of India (“foreign schools”), there was a pass rate of 93.98%, with a total of 18,774 candidates sitting the exams. The global, overall pass percentage for Class 10 is 94.4%.
For the first time this year both the CBSE and CICSE exams were conducted across two terms; the first term was held in November-December in 2021, while the second term happened in May-June. It is expected that both Boards will revert to the previous format in the 2023 exams.
The ‘Batch of Stoics’ Class of 2022
Both CBSE and CISCE students have faced numerous obstacles due to the Covid pandemic, with unexpected changes to the exam procedure adding a sense of uncertainty to an already anxious period.
This might seem to be reflected in the overall pass percentage, which this year fell to 92.71 per cent for the CBSE Class 12 (previously 99.37% in 2021) and to 94.4% for Class 10 (99.04% in 2021). However, a drop like this was to be expected because last year’s results were estimated based on teacher predictions, as final board exams were not sat in 2021 due to pandemic precautions. In fact, the overall pass percentages for 2022, for both CBSE Grade 10 and 12 results, are actually higher than the years prior to 2021.
This illustrates how, despite a challenging year, both CISCE and CBSE students in the UAE and across the world have produced some stellar results – leading them to be dubbed ‘The batch of stoics’ by educators and parents because of their courage in the face of adversity.

Advik Unni from GEMS New Millennium School – Al Khail celebrates scoring 95.6% in his CBSEs with a pot plant a cake given to him by the school
Nargish Khambatta, Principal/CEO of GEMS Modern Academy and Vice President – Education at GEMS Education, explains:
“When the CISCE announced that there would be two semester exams with different formats in November and March, it set an interesting challenge for our students and teachers. Grade 12 students began applying for university placements in September 2021 and juggled college applications, counsellor meetings, university interviews and entrance exams – before, during and after their exam on a particular day!
“The manner in which our students have balanced all these conflicting demands on their time and energy has been deeply inspirational, rightly earning them the title ‘Batch of Stoics’. A special mention must be made of their teachers and parents, who provided them with incessant guidance and preparation, love and motivation. At GEMS Modern Academy, we are immensely proud of all our children, and as yet another batch of graduates leaves our portals, they go forth equipped to make a positive difference.”
Asma Gilani, Principal, GEMS Our Own English High School – Sharjah (Girls), agrees that students have been tested more this year than ever before:
“Our girls have done exceedingly well despite the challenges and constraints of the pandemic. For some students, faith and fortitude was also tested along with the CBSE exams as they faced the most emotional and challenging situation of their life due to COVID-19. They definitely exemplified courage!”
Ambika Gulati, Principal, The Millennium School – Dubai, adds:
“The last academic year saw our students come to grips with changes in the assessment structure stipulated by CBSE. They rose to the challenge and worked with fortitude, diligence and strategy, as they had to prepare for staggered examinations administered in two terms, barely four months apart. They had to adapt as they prepared for objective style and competency-based questions. Our students have come out stronger from this unique challenge that they have navigated so successfully.”
Student Aryan Muralidharan, The Millennium School – Dubai, who scored 99% in his CBSE Grade 12 exams, told SchoolsCompared that the support from his family and school helped him to achieve in the face of a challenging situation:
“One of the major challenges was juggling the college admission process and board exams. Since I am going to India for my higher studies, I had to prepare for JEE [Joint Entrance Exam, required for certain technical undergraduate degrees at universities in India], which is much more difficult compared to the board exams. Our batch was able to face these challenges like stoics only thanks to support from school and family, for which I am extremely grateful.”
Meanwhile student Pranieti Ahuja of GEMS Modern Academy, who scored 99.25% in her ISC Grade 12 board exams, remembers the challenges that her cohort faced and feels proud of herself and her peers for overcoming them with stoicism:
“Blended learning began from September 2020, and as we entered Grade 12, it looked like things were gradually getting back to normal. This was until the format of board examinations completely changed, and the number of exams we had to write was doubled.”
“Consequently, study patterns had to be changed, past resources were rendered useless, and students had to cope with new teaching methods. Despite these obstacles, our teachers came up with brilliant plans that catered to our needs.”
“The fact that this batch was able to overcome everything that was thrown in its way and that it obtained such outstanding results truly showcases why ‘Batch of Stoics’ is an apt title for the Class of 2022.”
Below is our round-up of the CBSE and CICSE results from UAE schools that we have received so far.
