The Prophesy Tower. Chapter 59. Write a Novel Challenge.

by Alanah BunchJuly 22, 2020

The materials Isla had balanced in her pale hands resembled crystals. Three crystals of varying translucent hues, and all intricately woven with glistening edges. The low glow encompassing each crystal was what made them appear so foreign.

Archie blinked, “What…?”

“You need to give these to Neina as soon as possible.” Isla nodded at Janus, who silently proceeded to produce a velvet cloth from his own pocket. “Hold out your hands, Archie.”

He felt his fingers twitch to obey, but rational thought caused him to hesitate. This all had to be one sick, ridiculous joke, right? Another world? Glowing crystals? The entire situation was absurdly laughable.

But when he met Isla’s gaze again, the sharp azure of her eyes piercing his conscious, he knew this was no joke. No one was laughing.

This was serious.

With that last thought, he lifted his hands to mimic the cupping motion Isla had made with her own. He insistently ignored the slight, subtle shake of his own fingers as Janus draped the velvet cloth over his hands, and Isla gently urged the crystals into his cloaked palms. They were deceptively heavy and radiated a prickling warmth, even through the cloth.

“And I just…give these to her?”

Isla shot him an unimpressed look, “The last thing we need right now is to waste time answering questions we’ve already answered. But it is imperative that she touches at least one, and she can’t know who or where they came from.”

Concern broke through the brick wall of confusion that had been weighing on Archie’s mind. Could touching the crystals harm Neina? Even if these strangers claimed that they were doing this to protect her, how could he trust such a fickle contention? The relentless worry was knotting his stomach and curdling his judgement when he felt a hand on his shoulder. The pressure was vague but bizarrely grounding.

And when Janus spoke, his words were not strategically laced with sinister intention. They weren’t tossed at Archie’s pale complexion with the carelessness of a joke. They sounded, Archie dared say, genuine. “They won’t ail her in any way, Archie. But Neina…she really isn’t who you think she is. She doesn’t even know about her other half, so these crystals will help to unveil that shrouded part of herself.”

There was no room left for debate, because before Archie could muster the breath for a response, the room was falling away and disintegrating to mist, revealing the features of his office in its place.

“She must touch them today. I’ll start working at your company next week.” That was a surprise to Archie, considering he’d never had anyone tell him they were hiring themselves for his own business, “That is all we ask of you.”

The two figures began to vanish along with the rest of the room, and Janus called out with a dismissing breath, “Just a piece of advice – those crystals will kill you if you touch them. They’re only for Neina.” The straw being had the nerve to wink, before fully dissipating into oblivion.

Archie was wary, but that fear wasn’t enough to halt his endeavour to get the crystals to Neina. He felt an unusual sense of trust in the strangers.

With the assistance of his position in the company, he used a package that was being to delivered to Neina’s office to get the rocks to her, subtly slipping them inside.

In the evening of the same day, Neina mentioned she had a burn mark from where she had touched the crystals. Archie remained ignorant, only mere curiosity playing on his features.

It was a week later when their lives began to take a turn, jerking around sharp corners and taking them down a path Archie couldn’t even have fathomed the possibility of until now. Isla showed up at work, and Neina hadn’t been the same since.

And every day, Isla emphasized to Archie that he just needed to trust her, but such a simple, hardly arduous, task was proving itself to be borderline impossible. Neina was fainting with a frightening frequency; she was missing entire workdays; she had landed herself in the hospital over half a dozen times and Archie couldn’t believe any of this was happening on the premise of wanting to protect her.

Frankly, he hadn’t involved himself with Neina over the past few weeks, only drowning out the anxiety when he heard she was in hospital yet again with the piles of paperwork flooding his desk.

He was on the cusp of breaking point when Charlotte paid him a visit and revealed her connections to Isla, Janus, and some other dimension they were referring to as the Mors World.

But the confusing words that dripped from her lips had an entirely juxtaposing effect; they answered Archie’s questions, and he was starting to make sense of it all.

“It was a test.” Charlotte’s voice was balancing on the thread of a whisper; “Isla and Janus needed to throw her into the thick of it all, and they needed to pretend to be her enemies.”

Archie’s eyes swam with utter bewilderment, “But- why? They put her through so much trouble and pain.”

“They needed to test her- to see if her mind and conscious could withstand the reality of the Mors World. It’s trained her, too.”

“But was it worth all of the pain?”

Charlotte shrugged, “They also killed her.” She quickly clarified as horror dawned over Archie’s face, “Isla wasn’t in her right state of mind. She knew what she had set out to do, but the Queen is well known for her skill in manipulation. Isla was…tampered with. It wasn’t her fault, and she’s broken out of it now. She can be trusted again.”

“Trusted?! Are you serious? Sh-”

“Archie.” She placed a hand softly over his, feeling the cold, nervous vibrations and willing him to relax with contact, “Right now, Neina needs all of us. She needs you. You want to help her, don’t you?”

“I do…I will. But did they really have to do this to her?”

Charlotte’s smile was small, “She was going to be dragged into the Mors World regardless – they just carved out an easier path for her.” She shrugged with a sigh, “As the child from the prophecy, it’s her destiny.” She slipped out of her seat, holding out her hand, “We’re going to the Mors World, but first, we need to stop off at Neina’s office.”

Archie’s weary look was enough to prompt a further explanation, “She kept the crystals in her desk drawer. Those crystals awakened her ability to switch between the dimensions, but they do far more than that.” She dropped her voice again, as though someone else might have been listening, “They’re the key to tearing the Queen off that throne.”

With this chapter, I intended to tie up some loose ends and drive the plot forward. I think it's very important that we see the story from several different perspectives to fully grasp the situation, so I have tried to indulge that with Archie's perspective. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity."
