14. GEMS Jumeirah Primary School

Type of school: Private, for-profit

Curriculum: British EYFS

Age of children: Primary

School size: 1435

Location: Al Safa, Dubai

For many parents GEMS Jumeirah Primary School is the most sought after Primary in Dubai with Kings Dubai, reviewed here, and JESS, reviewed here. No question, all are outstanding schools – and all are adored by children and parents.

Let’s get the single stumbling block out of the way first. For some parents, the size of GEMS Jumeirah Primary School will be an issue. With a role of 1435 children this is a big school for small people. We would say in response that, practically, in its working day-to-day, the school is managed really well so that children certainly do not feel overwhelmed. But it’s worth bearing in mind.

This out of the way, GEMS Jumeirah Primary School excels across every category of provision. Teaching is particularly outstanding – and numbers of course do allow GEMS to invest heavily. The school does not like to focus on its SEND and G&T provision – but again here it shines. For many parents too, its providing Secondary continuity through its natural slipstream, and outstanding,  (GEMS) Jumeirah College for nearly all its children is a defining attraction.

As with all schools that make it to our top-25, it is the bigger picture – caring dynamics, community outreach, very strong parental links and the understanding (particularly strong here) that education, in a whole child context, is not all about SATS, that gives GEMS Jumeirah Primary School its edge. And the fact that it is a GEMS school certainly inspires the confidence of parents.

Parents should note that it is almost impossible to accurately read back SAT results comparatively before 2016 following significant UK curriculum changes. At risk of simplification, GEMS Jumeirah Primary School (outstanding) results very significantly outperform UK counterpart SAT scores, although it should be recognised that as a private school comparisons are not performing like-for-like with UK state sector schools.
