Not-for-profit schools show themselves to be outperforming their private sector peers this year, and it’s hard to conceive of a top-20 schools in UAE that does not include The Indian High School.
Where to begin with IHSD? Inclusion is probably the first stand-out feature in a long list. Probably the most over-subscribed school in the UAE it is also one that sticks to its guns and welcomes all children. Decisions on admissions are decided by a lottery for fairness – this is a school confident in its ideals, not-for-profit ethic and its ability to bring out the best from every child.
Second, scale. This is not a small school. With a role just short of 6,000 students, managing the school is on a different scale – and yet, under its long term (22 plus years) CEO, Dr Ashok Kumar, the school continues to excel. With numbers and not-for-profit status, together with a commitment to welcome children regardless of family income, come probably the best value fees in the emirates too with Year 12 provision, at AED 10,253, costing a quarter of fees in alternative curricular Oustanding schools operating at this level and significant less than lower performing schools in its own Indian curriculum sector.
Third, subject choice and breadth. Post 16 provision at The Indian High School is just outstanding. In a sector that elsewhere pushes young men and women into Science and Commerce Streams, The Indian High School sprinkles the Social Sciences, including Psychology, into the mix. Add a fabulous Entrepreneurship programme and the offer is leaps and bounds above the restrictions of lesser schools.
Needless to say, Performing Arts, including Music, Drama and Dance is top notch.
Finally, exam results. The Indian High School has a 100 university slipstream – and telling, around 40% of children go on to universities in the UK, US and Canada. Inclusive schooling is here on show at its very best. The fee levels make that achievement quite extraordinary.
